As always, the Italian producers have announced a massive attendance at the greatest international wine and spirits exhibition, which will be held in Bordeaux from 19 to 23 June 2011. For visitors from all over the world, this Vinexpo will be a golden opportunity to witness the vitality and sheer breadth of the Italian offering through the products on show and the presentations and tastings organised by the Italian exhibitors.
While the latest results from the VINEXPO / The Iwsr study confirm France’s leadership as an exporter of wine in terms of value (export sales of French wines are twice as high as that of Italian wines) Italy clearly stands out with regard to the volumes of wine it dispatches abroad. In 2009, Italian wine exports reached 212.3 million 9-litre cases, a 31.5% increase on 2005’s figures. As Robert Beynat, Chief Executive of Vinexpo, commented, “The volumes in which these wines are exported are the largest in the world and Vinexpo will give everyone a chance to develop their international markets”.
Focussing on quality
“In recent years Italian wine production has increasingly sought to bring high quality products to market, for which demand is growing fast, both in the domestic market and internationally. Sales of appellation wines are increasing in volume and in value”, stated Ambassador Umberto Vattani, the Chairman of ICE, the Italian Foreign Trade Institute.
This opinion is supported by clear facts in the VINEXPO / The iwsr study, where Italy is reported to be the second largest wine producer in the world, but also a market where the trend is towards more premium products: between 2009 and 2014, the volumes consumed of wines priced at less than US$5 per bottle are expected to shrink by 2.7%, while those with price tags between US$5 and US$10 per bottle are expected to sell in volumes 10.5% higher.
More than 320 Italian companies present at Vinexpo 2011
Thousands of sq. m of floor space reserved for Italian winegrowers
With more than 4,800 sq. m of stand space reserved, which is 20% more than in 2009, Italy will be the second best-represented country at Vinexpo ahead of Spain, but behind France.
The Italian Pavilion run by ICE covers 750 sq. m, in which a large number of Italian producers will pit competing ideas to display their wines. “The next ICE collective event during Vinexpo 2011 in Bordeaux will showcase the very best of Italian regional wines”, emphasizes Ambassador Vattani. The producing regions will be substantially represented: Sicily will exhibit with 440 sq. m, Tuscany will present its famous wines in a 450 sq. m area and an additional restaurant serving wine and food matches from the region. Winegrowers from Naples have more than 500 sq. m of stand area available to them, managed by the Avellino Chamber of Commerce.
New in 2011 is an area of nearly 330 sq. m commissioned by OIGA, the Italian National Observatory for Young Farmers’ Enterprises enabling 34 young Italian winegrowers to exhibit their products; yet another demonstration of Italian commercial vigour.
Alongside these pavilions, 60 Italian exhibitors will add their independent stands to the legions present throughout the 5-day exhibition, including Gruppo Italiano Vini, Luigi Cecchi & Figli, Santa Margherita and Zonin.
